Many of Zoro’s techniques are written as puns, and some have different meanings from their original meanings, so we will also explain the Japanese translations.
Tora Gari – Tiger Hunting
The Japanese translation is “虎狩り” (pronounced “Tora Gari”).
It means “Tiger Hunting.” Naturally, “Tiger Hunting” is not a commonly used term in Japan.
It seems that author Oda chose a meaning appropriate to Zoro’s technique and a pun on the pronunciation.
The Japanese word “虎刈り” (pronounced “Tora Gari”) has a completely different meaning commonly used in Japan, written as “Tora Gari.”
“虎刈り” (pronounced “Tora Gari”) means “Tiger haircut.” This refers to a shaved head or a buzz cut that went wrong.
This term is used to describe the uneven, patchy appearance of hair after it has been cut, resembling the fur of a tiger.
Ultra-Tora Gari (Extreme Tiger Hunt)
An enhanced version of “Tora Gari”
The Japanese spelling is “極虎狩り” (pronounced “Ultra-Tora Gari”).
This is also a pun, combining “Ultra” and “Tora Gari” because it’s an enhanced version.
Oni Giri (Demon Slayer)
The Japanese spelling is “鬼斬り” (pronounced “Oni Giri”)
It means “Demon Slayer.”
Obviously, this is also not standard Japanese.
The word with the same pronunciation that inspired the pun is “おにぎり”(pronounced “Oni Giri”),” which means “rice ball,” a uniquely Japanese portable food made by squeezing rice into a triangular or round shape.
Yaki Oni Giri (Burning Demon Cutter)
This is an enhanced version of “Oni Giri.”
The Japanese spelling is “焼鬼斬り” (pronounced “Yaki Oni Giri”)
It means “Burning Demon.” It’s a cutter.
The original word for the pun is “焼きおにぎり(pronounced “Yaki Oni Giri”),” which means “grilled rice ball,” which is a dish made by grilling rice balls, smearing them with soy sauce or miso paste, and grilling them again (very delicious).
Enbima Yonezu Oni Giri (Charm Demon Sleepless Night Ogre Cutter)
The Japanese translation is “艶美魔夜不眠鬼斬り”(pronounced “Enbima Yonezu Oni Giri”)
This is a super-powered version of “Oni Giri.”
The Japanese meanings of each word are:
“艶” (gorgeous, alluring)
“美” (beautiful)
“魔” (demon)
“夜” (night)
“不眠” (insomnia)
I can’t even understand the meaning of these combinations anymore^^;
The original word for the pun for “艶美魔夜不眠鬼斬り” is “エビマヨネーズおにぎり(Ebimayonezu Oni Giri)
It means shrimp mayonnaise rice ball (and it’s delicious too!)
